Academic Program
Departmentalization
Being responsible and accountable for one's learning encourages independence and ownership of one's achievement. The instructional format at St. Cyril of Alexandria School incorporates a variety of teaching methods such as small/large group learning, individualized instruction and cooperative learning. This is carried out partly through the school's departmentalized structure.
There are five departments. The Kindergarten department is made of two self-contained classrooms. The Primary (1st and 2nd grade) and Intermediate (3rd and 4th grade) departments encompass three classrooms made up of two grade levels that travel from class to class. The Advanced Intermediate (5th and 6th grade) and Jr. High (7th and 8th grade) departments encompass four classrooms divided by grade level that travel from class to class.
Class Offerings
Students in all grades spend age appropriate time focusing on social studies, reading, spelling, grammar, literature, writing, mathematics, science, physical education, computer education and religion.
In addition to aforementioned classes, students in Kindergarten through fourth grade are also exposed to Spanish, music, art and library skills.
Fifth through eighth graders are given choices for their additional classes. Examples of these enrichment classes are: Music Experience, Beginning Band, Advanced Band, Spanish (level 1, 2 or 3), Art, the Middle Ages, the Incredible Westward Movement, Gardening 101, Science in Action, Service to Others, Light the Fire in Young Readers, Hands On Math and Mathematical Applications.
Technology
Technology is here to stay...the youth of today have grown up with the world at their fingertips and, therefore, think and learn differently then those who grew up prior to the information age. Education must evolve with the students to meet them where they're at. To do this, we have technology infused around campus. Examples of this are: multiple PC's located in each classroom, our Computer Lab is outfitted with over thirty desktops and we have a mobile lab of nearly fifteen laptops that the teachers can bring into the classroom. Each classroom has a SmartBoard and projector and each department has a document camera.
Digital cameras, both still and video, can be used by the students for projects. Kindergarten students have used them to create an alphabet video as well as Jr. High students for World War Two battle documentaries. Additionally, we are excited to say students in fifth through eighth grade are provided e-mail accounts; for more information about this, visit Student Email and Blogging.
Other hardware on campus are two student response systems and two iPads for classrooms use. Software used on campus includes but is not limited to: Kidspiration, Inspiration, Smart Notebook, Alexandria Library, Pearson Math, StoryTown Reading, Adobe Premier, Microsoft Movie Maker, Microsoft Photostory, Google Apps and Microsoft Office 2007 products.
