Homework
Homework is assigned to reinforce material already taught and to foster habits of independent study, creativity and self-discipline. Suggested time allotment per day:
K-2 15 to 30 minutes per day
3-4 30 to 45 minutes per day
5-6 40 to 90 minutes per day
7-8 70 to 120 minutes per day
Discipline
The school uses one system across the departments and applies it with age appropriate expectations. Students may receive an OD (organizational demerit) worth one demerit or a DiD (disciplinary demerit), worth two. Once a student receives a certain amount of demerits which is dependent on the department, a Thursday detention is held after school. The length of dentention also depends on the department of the student.
Tardies
Being on time for class is a very important self-discipline skill which teaches children to learn how to set their own schedules and time limits. This skill will benefit them throughout their lives in whatever career they choose. Because of the disruptive nature of tardiness and the detrimental effect upon the rights of the non-tardy student to uninterrupted learning, consequences shall be imposed for excessive tardies.
The following policy has been established:
1. Five to seven tardies in one month - the student will attend a one hour RINO (Responsible Individuals are Number One) work group
2. Eight to ten tardies in one month - the student will attend a one and one-half hour RINO work group
3. Over ten tardies in one month - the student will attend a two hour RINO work group and will conference with the principal to resolve the problem in order to remain enrolled in the school.
*RINO dates are Saturdays.
Parent/Student Handbook
Each year, students and parents are given a copy of the School Handbook. In addition, students are given information on classroom guidelines specific to their department. All school-wide policies can be found in the Parent/Student Handbook. The 2010-2011 handbook may be seen and/or printed here.
